Institutional Core Competency of Communication
Faculty:
The Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Committee (ASLO) is asking for your assistance in assessing our Institutional Core Competency of Communication, which is defined as the ability to read, write, listen and speak clearly.
Communication is one of the eleven Core Competencies, which are a part of our Mission Statement. Together the Core Competencies describe what students should have learned when they complete an AA/AS Degree, a Career Certificate or transfer requirements at Long Beach City College.
Do you have an already existing project as a part of your curriculum where your students read on a topic, write a report and do either formal or informal speaking?
Or, are you a faculty member from English, Speech or ESL who is interested in developing this institutional assessment and planning activities to better integrate the teaching and learning of reading, writing, listening and speaking in classes?
If so, would you be interested in becoming a part of a group of faculty across campus from all disciplines that would use a common rubric to assess these assignments, and in doing so determine how well the we as a college are educating our students to read, write and speak clearly?
Faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Stipends will be awarded. ****
The details and timelines are on the attached application. This letter and application are also available on our website http://aslo.lbcc.edu/ The ASLO Committee will meet on April 22nd to review all applications

Critical Thinking
In March of 2006, the Curriculum Committee approved the Institutional Core Competencies submitted by the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Committee (ASLO). Critical thinking was subsequently selected as the first core competency to assess, because it was highly rated on faculty surveys as being important for student learning, and because the curriculum of every course already includes it.
In Spring of 2007, we asked faculty to submit questions to a critical thinking testbank. We then drew questions from this testbank to develop a Critical Thinking Assessment. We will be piloting the assessment in the Spring 2008 semester. From this pilot we will be analyzing the results and making modifications to the assessment before it is administered again.

Assessment
Get an extended definition of "assessment" [html]
Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning.
